Meet the author

Richard J. Foster is a theologian and founder of Renovaré, a prominent international organization dedicated to helping people become more like Jesus through spiritual formation. A Quaker and former pastor, Foster's extensive study of Christian history and personal experience with spiritual practices revealed a deep hunger for substantive faith. This led him to write Celebration of Discipline, which has guided millions of readers toward a richer, more authentic spiritual life by reintroducing the church to its own transformative traditions.

The Script

We treat the spiritual life like an impossible athletic feat. We admire the saints and spiritual giants from a distance, convinced they possess a level of willpower or divine favor we simply lack. We believe that if we just strain harder, clench our fists tighter, and try with more desperate resolve, we will finally break through to a deeper connection with God. Yet, this very effort—this relentless, white-knuckled striving—is precisely what leaves us exhausted, defeated, and further from the peace we seek. It’s a paradox built into the heart of modern faith: the more frantically we chase spiritual depth, the more it recedes from our grasp, leaving us to wonder if we are fundamentally broken or simply not chosen for the task.

This cycle of spiritual burnout is what a young Quaker pastor and theology professor named Richard J. Foster observed all around him in the 1970s. He saw sincere, devoted people who were trapped in a frustrating loop of trying and failing, believing that spiritual transformation was a matter of sheer force of will. Drawing from his own deep study of Christian contemplative history and his personal experiences, Foster realized the problem was a lack of wisdom. He wrote Celebration of Discipline to recover the ancient, practical pathways—the Disciplines—that place us in the flow of God’s grace where true change can finally occur.

Module 1: The Path of Disciplined Grace

We often think of spiritual growth in one of two ways. Either it's all up to us, a matter of sheer willpower. Or it's all up to God, a passive waiting game. Foster argues both are wrong. The real path to transformation is what he calls "disciplined grace."

This brings us to a foundational idea. Superficiality is the curse of our age. We live in a world that promises instant satisfaction. We want quick fixes. We want life hacks for the soul. But there are no shortcuts to depth. Foster argues the desperate need today is for deep people. And depth is cultivated. It doesn't happen by accident.

So, how do we cultivate it? Foster explains that willpower alone is not enough. Trying to defeat ingrained habits like anger or impatience with a frontal assault is a recipe for failure. He calls this "will worship." It’s a form of idolatry that focuses on external actions but never changes the heart. You can force a smile. You can bite your tongue. But you can't will yourself into a state of genuine peace or love.

This is where the disciplines come in. The Spiritual Disciplines are the means to receive God's transforming grace. They don't earn us anything. They don't make God love us more. Instead, they place us in a position where God can work within us. Foster uses a powerful analogy. A farmer cannot make a seed grow. That power is beyond him. But the farmer can do certain things. He can plow the field. He can plant the seed. He can water the soil. These actions create the conditions for growth. The Spiritual Disciplines are our way of plowing the field of our own hearts. They are the practical things we do to position ourselves to receive the grace that brings real change.

And here’s the thing. This is for ordinary people. The only prerequisite is a genuine longing for God. The purpose of the Disciplines is liberation and joy. They are pathways to freedom. Freedom from anxiety. Freedom from self-interest. Freedom from the tyranny of having to have our own way. When practiced correctly, the Disciplines lead to a life characterized by singing, dancing, and a deep, abiding joy.
