The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior

12 minDr. David R. Hawkins

What's it about

Ever wonder why some people effortlessly succeed while others constantly struggle? What if you could instantly tell the difference between a person, idea, or choice that will lift you up versus one that will drag you down? Get ready to unlock this hidden ability. This summary of Dr. David R. Hawkins's groundbreaking work reveals how to distinguish true Power from draining Force. You'll learn his "Map of Consciousness," a simple yet profound tool to measure the truth and integrity of anything, helping you make better decisions, attract success, and elevate your life.

Meet the author

Dr. David R. Hawkins was a nationally renowned psychiatrist, physician, and researcher whose groundbreaking work on the nature of consciousness led to the creation of the Map of Consciousness. His extensive clinical experience treating the human mind revealed a direct link between emotional states and physical well-being. This unique integration of spiritual principles with scientific inquiry provided the foundation for his revolutionary insights into human behavior and the subtle energetic fields that govern our lives, as detailed in Power vs. Force.

The Script

We assume that the loudest voice in the room commands the most authority. The military with the biggest arsenal wins the war. The company with the most aggressive marketing captures the market. This belief—that victory belongs to the one who can push, shove, and coerce the hardest—is the unquestioned logic of our world. We see it in our politics, our boardrooms, and even our personal relationships. We call this 'force,' and we spend our lives trying to accumulate more of it, believing it is the only path to getting what we want. But what if this entire premise is built on a misunderstanding? What if the most effective, influential, and enduring states of being are actually quiet, unassuming, and require no effort at all?

This exact question consumed Dr. David R. Hawkins for over two decades. As a nationally recognized psychiatrist and spiritual teacher, he observed a profound paradox in his work: patients who achieved miraculous recoveries and individuals who reported states of deep enlightenment seemed to operate from a completely different set of principles than the rest of the world. They were aligned with reality. This appeared to be a measurable phenomenon. Driven to decode this difference, Hawkins dedicated himself to a rigorous scientific study, using kinesiology to test the body's response to various stimuli. The result was a 'map of consciousness,' a hierarchical framework that distinguishes the draining, contractive nature of force from the energizing, expansive nature of true power.

Module 1: The Body as a Truth Detector

Imagine your body as a finely tuned instrument, capable of distinguishing truth from falsehood. This is the foundation of Hawkins's entire methodology. He revived a technique from clinical practice called Applied Kinesiology, or muscle testing.

The process is simple. It involves two people. One person, the subject, extends their arm. The other, the tester, applies gentle downward pressure on the wrist. When the subject holds a true statement or a positive stimulus in mind, their arm remains strong. When they hold a false statement or a negative stimulus, their arm instantly goes weak.

Think of it this way. Your body has an innate, subconscious ability to discern life-affirming energy from life-draining energy. This response is universal and objective. It bypasses conscious beliefs, opinions, and biases. In Hawkins's studies, subjects universally tested weak when exposed to things like artificial sweeteners, pesticides, or even a hidden picture of a malevolent historical figure. Conversely, they tested strong when exposed to organic supplements, beautiful art, or an image of an inspiring leader.

This leads to a powerful insight. The human nervous system is an instrument of consciousness that can differentiate between anabolic, life-supporting patterns and catabolic, life-draining ones. Hawkins argues this is an interface with a much larger field of information. When you hold a thought, you are tapping into a universal database of consciousness. Your body’s response is the readout. For anyone in a leadership role, this suggests a radical new tool for vetting ideas, strategies, or even potential hires. It shifts decision-making from pure logic to a more holistic, intuitive form of discernment.

So what does this mean for you? You can start by observing your own physical and emotional reactions to different environments, people, or information. Notice what energizes you and what drains you. This is the first step toward developing what Hawkins calls a "science of subjective experience."

Module 2: The Map of Consciousness

Now we get to the core framework of the book. Through millions of these muscle-testing calibrations, Hawkins and his team developed what he calls the Map of Consciousness. This is a logarithmic scale from 1 to 1,000 that calibrates the energy level of every human emotion, attitude, and belief system.

The scale is logarithmic. This is crucial. A jump from level 200 to 300 represents an exponential leap in power. The most important dividing line on this map is the level of 200.

Hawkins calls this the level of Courage and Integrity. Everything that calibrates below 200 represents "Force." These are destructive, life-depleting energy fields. They include emotions like Shame , Guilt , Apathy , Fear , Desire , Anger , and Pride . When we operate from these states, we are weak. We rely on coercion, manipulation, and control. Force always creates a counter-force. It's a zero-sum game that is exhausting and ultimately unsustainable. Think of a company culture driven by fear or a political movement fueled by anger. It may seem powerful in the short term, but it inevitably burns out or collapses.

But here's where it gets interesting. Everything that calibrates at 200 and above represents "Power." These are constructive, life-affirming energy fields. They begin with Courage and move up through Neutrality , Willingness , Acceptance , Reason , Love , Joy , Peace , and finally, Enlightenment .

When we operate from these states, we are strong. We inspire, uplift, and empower. Power doesn't need to be asserted. It just is. It unifies and creates win-win scenarios. A leader operating from Love doesn't need to force their team to perform. They inspire loyalty and excellence through their very presence.

A key takeaway here is that you can consciously choose to shift your own level of consciousness by moving from states of Force to states of Power. Simply becoming aware of these levels is the first step. For example, recognizing that Pride at 175 is still a weak and vulnerable state can motivate you to make the leap to Courage at 200. This involves taking full responsibility for your own life and perceptions, refusing to see yourself as a victim. It’s a profound shift from blaming the world to creating your world.
