Meet the author
Raymond Chandler is widely considered one of the founders of the hardboiled school of detective fiction and a master stylist who elevated the genre to literature. An oil executive before turning to writing during the Great Depression, he drew upon the corruption and glamour of 1930s Los Angeles to create his cynical, yet honorable, hero Philip Marlowe. Chandler’s sharp, lyrical prose and unflinching look at the darker side of American life defined a generation of crime writing and continues to influence writers and filmmakers today.
