The Script

You're at a coffee shop, and someone makes intense, flattering eye contact from across the room. A little thrill goes through you. Later that day, you see them again, this time at the grocery store. What a coincidence. The next morning, a bouquet of your favorite, slightly obscure flower—the one you mentioned in a passing Instagram post months ago—is waiting on your doorstep with an unsigned note. The thrill is now mixed with a prickle of unease. Is this a grand romantic gesture, the beginning of an epic love story? Or is it the first move in a dangerous game where you are the unwitting prize? That razor-thin line between a charming meet-cute and the start of a terrifying obsession is a space where intentions are murky and perception is everything. One person's fairy tale is another's horror story, and the most frightening part is how easily one can bleed into the other.

This unsettling ambiguity is precisely the territory Jesse Q. Sutanto wanted to explore. Having grown up devouring romance novels, she became fascinated by how many beloved romantic tropes—the persistent suitor who won't take no for an answer, the grand gesture that borders on surveillance—would be terrifying in real life. She noticed how these stories often rewarded the pursuer, framing their obsessive behavior as proof of deep love. Sutanto decided to write a story that flips that script on its head, taking the familiar beats of a YA romance and twisting them into a nail-biting thriller. "The Obsession" was born from her desire to dissect those tropes, showing readers just how quickly a dream guy can become a living nightmare when his 'love' is really about control.

Module 1: The Anatomy of an Obsession

The story opens with Logan, a student at the elite Draycott Academy. He is drowning in grief after the death of a girl named Sophie, whom he loved. His world is gray and numb. Then, he literally bumps into a new girl, Delilah. In that instant, his world shifts from black and white to intense, vivid color. This encounter becomes the catalyst for a new, all-consuming fixation.

Logan's mind immediately reframes this chance meeting as destiny. Obsession often begins with a self-created narrative of fate. He believes the universe has sent Delilah to save him from his pain. He thinks, "You’ve gone through enough, Logan. Here she is." This is a transfer of emotional investment. His grief for Sophie is instantly repurposed into a new mission. His new purpose is Delilah.

This leads to the next stage. The illusion of intimacy is built through digital surveillance. Logan doesn't try to get to know Delilah through conversation. Not at first. He dives into her digital life. He uses Instagram and Facebook to find her full name, Delilah Laura Wong. He scours her Goodreads profile to learn her favorite author. He even uses her friend's social media check-ins to pinpoint her home address. He constructs a detailed profile of her, mistaking this data for genuine connection. He believes he knows her intimately, when in reality, he only knows her data trail.

From there, the obsession escalates into the physical world. Invasive actions are justified through a twisted sense of protection. Logan’s online research quickly bleeds into real-world stalking. He follows Delilah through school, hiding to watch her. He feels intense frustration when his view is blocked. Later, he installs a hidden camera in a tree across from her house. He tells himself this is to keep her safe. He thinks, "It’s why I’m here, to protect her." He rebrands his violation of her privacy as a noble duty. In his own mind, he is her sole guardian, the only one who truly understands and can protect her. This deep-seated belief system is what makes him so dangerous. He is operating from a place of perceived love, not malice.
