Meet the author

Saint Louis de Montfort was a French Roman Catholic priest and confessor whose Marian spirituality profoundly influenced popes, including Saint John Paul II, and countless faithful worldwide. A tireless missionary preacher, he dedicated his life to renewing the Church by promoting authentic devotion to Jesus through Mary. This dedication culminated in his spiritual masterwork, True Devotion to Mary, which he wrote to guide souls along what he called an “easy, short, perfect, and secure way” to attaining union with Christ.

The Script

In 2016, the celebrated actor Mark Wahlberg, a devout Catholic, sent shockwaves through social media by posting a video of himself from a church pew. He was inviting his millions of followers to join him in prayer, openly declaring his faith and encouraging others to do the same. This public act of devotion, so contrary to the carefully curated, secular image most stars project, revealed a deeper current running beneath the surface of fame. Wahlberg's willingness to stake his public persona on his private faith mirrors a fundamental human need: the desire for an unwavering advocate, a powerful intercessor who is always in our corner, no matter the public pressure or personal trial. It speaks to a search for a connection that is both profoundly intimate and powerfully effective, a spiritual 'manager' who can navigate the complexities of life and lead us toward our ultimate goal.

This exact spiritual dynamic—the search for the most certain and loving guide to God—is what consumed a French priest over three centuries ago. Saint Louis de Montfort was a tireless missionary traveling through the rugged countryside of western France. He saw people struggling, their faith wavering and their connection to Jesus feeling distant and abstract. He was crafting a spiritual program for ordinary people—farmers, soldiers, and villagers—who needed a reliable, accessible path to holiness. He poured his life's work as a preacher and confessor into one manuscript, articulating what he called the 'secret' to finding Jesus. This secret was a total consecration through Mary, whom he presented as the ultimate advocate, the one who most perfectly and quickly leads a soul to her Son. His book, "True Devotion to Mary," was born from this intense pastoral mission to give everyone the most secure route to a deeper relationship with Christ.

Module 1: The Core Principle — Christ as the Ultimate End

The entire framework of True Devotion rests on a single, non-negotiable principle. True devotion must have Jesus Christ as its ultimate end. Any spiritual practice that doesn't lead directly to a deeper union with Christ is, in de Montfort’s view, a dangerous illusion. He is uncompromising on this point. Jesus is described with a string of exclusive titles: our only Master, our only Lord, our only Way, Truth, and Life. There are no exceptions. This is a book about reaching Jesus through Mary.

This immediately addresses a common concern for many Christians. Does focusing on Mary detract from Jesus? De Montfort argues the opposite. He suggests that establishing a solid devotion to Mary is done precisely to establish a more perfect devotion to Jesus. The logic is simple. God the Father chose to give His Son to the world through Mary. The Holy Spirit chose to form Jesus in her womb. Jesus Himself chose to be subject to her for thirty years. If the Holy Trinity chose this path to come to us, de Montfort asks, why would we invent a different path to go to Him?

So, how does this work in practice? The author introduces a radical concept: the renewal of our baptismal vows. At baptism, most of us made promises through our parents to renounce Satan and belong to Christ. De Montfort proposes we renew these vows consciously and personally. But here’s the key. We make this renewal by placing our promises, our very selves, into the hands of Mary. The goal is to achieve total belonging to Jesus through Mary. This idea was so powerful that it inspired Pope John Paul II's papal motto, "Totus Tuus," which means "Totally Yours." He took this directly from de Montfort, expressing his complete surrender to Christ through His mother. It's about leveraging the divine economy God Himself established.

And here's the thing. This commitment is total. It’s about giving everything—our body, our soul, our possessions, and even the spiritual value of our good actions—to Mary. The purpose is to give them through her so she can present them perfectly to Jesus. It’s a profound act of humility, admitting that our own offerings are stained and imperfect. We need a mediator who can purify them.

Module 2: The Problem of False Devotions and the Marks of the True

Now, let's turn to a critical distinction. De Montfort is acutely aware that devotion can go wrong. He dedicates significant space to identifying and dismantling what he calls "false devotions." He argues that the devil, like a counterfeiter, fakes the most valuable things. Since devotion to Jesus and Mary is so precious, it's a prime target for corruption.

He outlines seven types of false devotees. You might recognize some of these mindsets. There are the "Critical Devotees," proud intellectuals who look down on simple, popular piety. Then there are the "Scrupulous Devotees," who live in constant fear that honoring Mary might somehow offend Jesus. But perhaps the most dangerous are the "Presumptuous Devotees." These are people who use Marian practices as a cover for a life of unrepentant sin. They wear a scapular or say a Rosary but continue in pride, impurity, or greed, believing their external devotions will save them. This, de Montfort warns, is a terrible abuse of grace.

So what does authentic devotion look like? True devotion is defined by five essential interior qualities. These are the markers that separate genuine practice from superficiality. First, it is Interior, springing from the mind and heart, not just from external habit. Second, it is Tender or Trustful, marked by a childlike confidence in Mary’s help. Third, it is Holy, meaning it actively leads you to avoid sin and imitate Mary’s virtues, especially her profound humility and lively faith.

Building on that idea, true devotion is also Constant. It perseveres through dryness and difficulty. The true devotee doesn't abandon their prayers when they feel nothing. They push through, relying on faith alone. Finally, and most importantly, true devotion is Disinterested. This is the real test. You serve her because she is worthy of service, and because serving her is the most perfect way to serve God. The goal is God alone, found in her.
