The Script

A family gathers around a hospital bed, hands clasped, voices hushed. The room is sterile and quiet, but the air is thick with a question that hangs unspoken between the rhythmic beeps of the monitor: What now? For many, the moments after a loved one passes are a void, a silent, gray space where certainty ends and a vast, formless mystery begins. We talk about 'a better place,' but what does that truly mean? Is it a vague, spiritual ether? A place of disembodied clouds and harp music? The human mind struggles to grasp what comes next, often filling the emptiness with clichés or simply admitting defeat, unable to form a concrete picture.

This gap between our earthly grief and our hope for eternity is precisely where author Randy Alcorn found himself after losing his own mother. He was struck by the common, yet unbiblical, ideas people held about Heaven—that it was boring, non-physical, and disconnected from the life we know. Driven by a desire to replace these vague notions with the vibrant, tangible reality described in Scripture, he embarked on an exhaustive study. Alcorn, a theologian and founder of Eternal Perspective Ministries, compiled decades of research into his comprehensive book, Heaven. From that massive work, he distilled the most essential and encouraging truths into 50 Days of Heaven, creating a devotional specifically to guide those navigating the immediate aftermath of loss, offering not just comfort, but a clear, compelling, and biblical vision of the world to come.

Module 1: Heaven Is Not a Cloud—It's a Real Place

Let's start by dismantling the biggest myth. The popular image of Heaven is of disembodied spirits floating on clouds, strumming harps for eternity. Alcorn argues this is a harmful distortion. The biblical vision is far more concrete and exciting.

The first core insight is that Heaven is a tangible, physical place that will ultimately merge with a renewed Earth. Alcorn points directly to Jesus's own words. In John 14, Jesus doesn't use vague spiritual language. He uses physical nouns. He says, "In my Father’s house are many rooms... I am going there to prepare a place for you." "House," "rooms," and "place" all signify a physical, tangible destination. This is a promise of real estate.

Building on that idea, the ultimate destiny for believers is to live on a renewed physical creation. This is the New Earth. This is our true and eternal home, fulfilling God's original design for humanity to live in a physical world. Early Christian art found in Roman catacombs supports this. It depicts Heaven with beautiful landscapes, children playing, and people feasting. This shows a belief in a physical, joyful afterlife.

So what happens next? Alcorn makes a critical distinction. There is an intermediate Heaven and an eternal Heaven. When a believer dies, their spirit goes to be with Christ in what's called the "intermediate" or "present" Heaven. Think of it as a wonderful layover. Jesus promised the thief on the cross, "Today you will be with me in paradise." That's an immediate, conscious reality. The Apostle Paul echoed this, saying to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

But this isn't the final act. The ultimate hope is the resurrection. This leads to the eternal Heaven, which is the New Earth. Revelation 21 describes the New Jerusalem "coming down out of heaven from God" to the New Earth. Heaven and Earth are united. God's home becomes our home, forever. This is the redemption of creation.
