The Script

We believe curiosity is a harmless, even noble, trait. It fuels discovery and expands our understanding. But this view mistakes a powerful, primal drive for a gentle intellectual exercise. True curiosity is a predator's instinct, an insatiable hunger to look where we are warned not to. It’s the force that compels us to slow down at the scene of an accident, to seek out the grim details of a tragedy, to click the link we know we shouldn't. This drive is about witnessing the forbidden, and the modern world has built a vast, invisible economy to service this appetite, turning the darkest corners of human experience into a consumer product. We assume there's a line, a boundary of decency we would never cross. But what if the only thing holding that line in place is a lack of opportunity?

This very question is what drove author Matt Shaw to write 'PORN.' Known as the 'King of Extreme Horror,' Shaw has spent his career charting the territories of taboo and transgression. He noticed a growing disconnect between the sanitized violence people consume in mainstream media and the raw, unfiltered horror that a small, but dedicated, audience craved. 'PORN' was his direct response, an experiment to test the absolute limits of that craving. It was conceived to hold up a mirror to the reader's own voyeuristic impulse, forcing them to confront the unsettling reality of what they are willing to watch when no one else is looking.

Module 1: The Industrialization of Desire

Pornography is often perceived as a raw, unfiltered expression of human sexuality. But the book argues this is a carefully crafted illusion. The reality is far more manufactured. Pornography is a highly scripted industrial product. Just like a fast-food chain follows a precise formula for its burgers, the porn industry adheres to strict genre conventions. Scenes are choreographed. Dialogue is scripted. Even the seemingly spontaneous "gonzo" style, known for its raw, first-person perspective, follows a predictable narrative arc. This formula exists for a reason: it guarantees a consistent, easily consumable product for a mass audience.

This industrial approach extends to the performers. The book reveals a stark message embedded in these scripts: Porn systematically portrays women as one-dimensional objects who are perpetually available and eager to please. In this world, women have no boundaries, no need for safety, and no desires independent of their male partners. They are depicted as enthusiastic participants in their own degradation, cheerfully accepting insults and pain. The word "no" is conspicuously absent. This is a core feature of the product, designed to create a fantasy of total control for the male consumer.

But what about the men in these films? They aren't spared from this dehumanization. The porn script reduces men to unfeeling, soulless entities defined only by their physical performance. They show no emotion, no empathy, and no intimacy. Their goal is singular: ejaculation. Once the "money shot" is delivered, often on the woman's face or body, the interaction ends abruptly. This act, the author argues, is a powerful symbol of dominance and dismissal. It marks the woman as "used goods" and reinforces a vision of sex completely detached from human connection. One producer is quoted as saying it's about "making hate."

So what's the effect of this? This leads us to a crucial insight. This formulaic, power-driven depiction of sex desensitizes viewers and creates a demand for increasingly extreme content. When sex is stripped of all emotional connection, it becomes repetitive. It gets boring. To keep viewers engaged, the industry must constantly "push the envelope." This creates a feedback loop. Viewers become habituated to a certain level of intensity, then require something more shocking to achieve the same level of arousal. This explains the rise of genres centered on humiliation, pain, and acts once considered taboo, like "ass-to-mouth." The product must escalate to survive.
