Meet the author

Evan Winter is the award-winning author of the Sunday Times and internationally bestselling epic fantasy series, The Burning, which began with The Rage of Dragons. Born in England to South American parents, Winter was raised in Africa near the historical territory of his Xhosa ancestors. He conceived of his series to create the fantasy story he had always wanted to read, one that centered characters who looked like him and his son.

The Script

In a world where some are born to rule and others to serve, a person’s worth is decided at birth. Two boys are born on the same day. One is born into a high caste, destined for command, his path paved with honor and expectation. The other is born Lesser, his destiny to be a tool, a shield, a sacrifice. They are raised in the same society, under the same sun, but their worlds might as well be on different planets. For the high-caste boy, failure is a lesson. For the Lesser boy, a single misstep means death, not just for him, but for those he loves. What happens when the Lesser, the one who is supposed to be powerless, finds a fuel that the high-caste cannot comprehend? What happens when his grief and rage become a weapon more potent than any sword or magic he is forbidden to wield?

This question of how far an ordinary person can push themselves when fueled by an all-consuming fire is at the heart of Evan Winter's own story. As a child, he was surrounded by his mother’s stories of powerful Zulu kings and fierce warriors, tales that stood in stark contrast to the fantasy books he loved, which rarely featured characters who looked like him. One night, his father, who had grown up in poverty in London, told him, 'The rage of a lion is a whisper next to the rage of a man who has nothing to lose.' That idea lodged in Winter's mind. Years later, struggling with his own feelings of being an outsider and wanting to create a hero his son could see himself in, he began waking up at 5 a.m. every day to write before his day job, channeling that intense, focused drive into the story of a boy who refuses to accept his fate.

Module 1: The Iron Cage of Caste

The world of the Omehi people is built on a rigid, unyielding hierarchy. It is biological. Your birth caste dictates your physical potential. Nobles are born bigger, stronger, and faster than Lessers. This truth is the bedrock of their society. It justifies a system where Lessers are seen as expendable. They are the foot soldiers, the "fodder," whose purpose is to die on the front lines so the elite Noble warriors can win the day.

We see this through the eyes of Tau, a young man from the Lesser caste. His world is one of limited horizons. He can become an Ihashe, a common soldier, but he can never dream of becoming an Indlovu, the elite Noble warrior class. The system is designed to keep him in his place. When Tau defies a Noble, the consequences are swift and brutal. His father, Aren, is maimed and executed in a rigged duel. The message is clear: a Lesser's life has no value compared to a Noble's honor.

But here’s the thing. This system creates its own poison. The constant oppression and devaluation of life breeds a deep, simmering rage. Tau’s personal tragedy ignites this rage. He sees the system as a cage. And he decides he will do anything to break it. His journey begins with a simple, burning need for vengeance. This raw, personal motivation becomes the engine for everything that follows. He vows to kill the men responsible for his father’s death. To do that, he must become a warrior unlike any the world has ever seen.
