This life of gilded isolation—a prison built from reverence instead of stone—is the central tension that sparked an idea for author Jennifer L. Armentrout. Known for her compelling characters who navigate worlds of intense danger and even more intense romance, Armentrout wanted to explore a new kind of fantasy heroine. She wanted to write about a sheltered young woman whose greatest battle begins internally: the fight for her own identity against a destiny that demands she have none. Frustrated by the lack of agency she saw in some fantasy heroines, she decided to create Poppy, a character whose forbidden desires and secret defiance become the very catalyst for a world-shattering revelation.
